Data for Your FinOps

If you want to to build your understanding of your Azure / AWS bill bottom up the data are available in your portal. Here, you can find links to detailed instructions and some tips to get you started in the right direction in one place.

Managing Costs

If you are a bit like us, you might like to build your understanding of your Azure / AWS bill bottom up. And you can download these data from your portal.

Below you can get links to find detailed instructions on how to download from:

  • Azure (if you are on an Enterprise Agreement)
  • Azure (if you are on a Microsoft Customer Agreement or Pay-as-you-Go)
  • AWS

Also, be aware that there are several tools included in your portals. You can find links to Azure tools in our blog on savings in Azure.

Data for Azure on an Enterprise Agreement

If you are on a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, follow these instructions to download your usage report.

A few things you may want to be aware of:

  • Make sure you choose the proper billing scope. If you want to include everything, you should select “Billing account.” Be aware that you might have more than one billing account. Currently, it is not possible to download data for more than one billing account.
  • You get the chance to choose between “Actual cost” and “Amortized cost” when downloading. The actual cost would include the entire amount in a prepaid reservation and zero cost the following months. The amortized cost will consist of the prepayment over the reservation’s life allocated to the resource using the specific reservation. If you choose amortized cost, you cannot reconcile the cost to the monthly invoice.
  • If you want to allocate the Azure Hybrid Benefit (AHB) cost, you can find information if a resource is assigned AHB in the additional comments section – but well hidden.

If you have any questions about the download or how to work with or interpret the data, please do not hesitate to book some time with us – we’d love to help you get started!

Data for Azure on a Microsoft Customer Agreement / Pay-as-you-Go

If you are on a Microsoft Customer Agreement or buys directly from azure.com (Pay-as-you-Go), follow these instructions to download your usage report.

A few things you may want to be aware of:

  • Make sure you choose the proper billing scope. If you want to include everything, you should select “Billing account.” Be aware that you might have more than one billing account. Currently, it is not possible to download data for more than one billing account.
  • The costs are actual costs, which means that a prepaid reservation is fully included in the month it is paid, and the cost is zero on the resources where you allocate the reservation. If you want to see the resource’s cost (i.e., a VM), you need to get amortized costs. You can get this from the API, but currently not as a downloadable file.

Data for AWS

You can download a cost & usage report if you follow these instructions

A few things you may want to be aware of:

  • If you want a complete data set, you should log into the organization with a management account and select consolidated billing.
  • AWS does not automatically track detailed usage, but you have to turn it on yourself. Consequently, you cannot get these reports before the date where you first start tracking.
  • We recommend that you include resource IDs (point #5 in the instructions) and time granularity = hourly (point #12 in the instructions) if you want to get a granular view of your costs.

If you have any questions about the download or how to work with or interpret the data, please do not hesitate to book a free consultation with us – no strings attached!

Why should I choose Kostner?
